It’s a little over 3 years old and has just over 850 posts.

There are also 9 pages of Special Information.

Folks new to the blog might miss something important to them because they aren’t aware of some of the ways they can find things.

Those 9 Special Pages are pretty self-explanatory; check out those black tabs with white writing at the top of the blog

Also near the top, on the right, is a search box—enter single words, multiple words with commas between them, or phrases.

If you scroll down a bit, the left side-panel has a Top Posts & Pages area and, right under it, a Top Tags Cloud—the larger the words in that cloud, the more posts with that topic (and, hovering over the clickable words tells you how many posts

Plus, if you explore that left side-bar from top to bottom, you’ll find a wealth of other resources

And, if all else fails, at the top of the side-bar, in pink type, is a Contact Me link so you can send me an email and ask me anything at all

One other thing you could do that would help me a lot is take my survey of what You want to see on this blog :-)

Top Posts & Pages for 2013

Many blog authors are quite obsessive about checking their statistics—I’ve learned, slowly, to control myself—not get all bent out of shape if the numbers fall and not become overly excited if they rise

I’m in this for the long-haul and it can take many years for a blog to really take off and become widely popular.

Also, the “Top” blogs out there are the ones that cater to reading habits that are shaped by our materialistic, over-hyped culture—something I’m known for avoiding :-)

So, here are my stats for 2013 (I stopped when the numbers fell below 122 views since that would be an “average” of one view every three days—in other words, these are the top 20 out of 282…):

Top Ten Posts About Writing & Writers . . .

After more than two years of faithful blogging—attempting to provide solid information and valuable resources—this blog has become a deep mine of knowledge—a web of posts that refer to each other—a Space that deserves exploration

The Top Posts & Pages, in the left side-bar is a guide to the most visited posts but for only a short amount of recent time

Top Tags spans all the posts, but it’s a system devised by me and may not give someone the information they want

The Search: type, hit enter box, on the upper right of the site, is a place to put individualized words and phrases

So, there are three ways to find things in this Space/web/mine of posts

Then, there are the statistics of the top posts visited by readers—some by hitting the front page, some by using search engines.

I’ll list the top ten posts and pages visited here over the last 2 years and 3.5 months; but, let me explain a couple things:

The top listing below is for Home page / Archives—basically, a visit to the front page and whichever post happens to be there.

It shows 15,784 visits; but, the blog has had a total of 48,758 views

This means 32,974 visits were to somewhere in the Space/web/mine of posts that weren’t the most recent

Knowing that the majority of people visiting here did not land on the front page is valuable information for me as a blogger—kind of like realizing that people in a magazine store were not seeing the covers of magazines as often as they were using x-ray vision to look at stories inside

Weird analogy, maybe, but still the way things work in our Digital Information Age :-)

So

Here are the Top Ten:

Top 20 Search Terms That Got People To This Blog . . .

I’ve been writing in this blog for 2 years and 10 days, 5 times a week

I need your help in deciphering some data.

Most bloggers keep track of statistics.

How many Views does the blog have? —> 41,642 as of this moment

But, Views is a tricky number—it doesn’t mean how many people visited.

For example, if 100 people each looked at 2 pages of this blog, it would have 200 Views

Another stat most bloggers care about is Top Posts & Pages.

I’ve published information on the top posts and pages for this blog in April, August, and September of 2011 and May and August of 2012.

An interesting stat is the Referrers—other places that sent folks here—the top 6 being various Search Engines, WordPress.com ( the host of this blog helps other WordPress bloggers find me :-), Twitter, Google+, Facebook, and StumbleUpon.

A stat that intrigues me is Clicks—which of the links I plant in my posts do people investigate—the all-time top one being notesfromanalien.yolasite.com/contact-us.php <— where folks can get a free copy of my novel :-)

But the stat I’d really like your help with is Search Engine Terms—the words people use in Google, Bing, etc. that lead them to various posts here.

There are all those people looking for things—they plunk some words in a search engine—they end up Here

What I’d like you to do is look at the top 20 search terms used to get to this blog and tell me “something”, in the Comments, about the folks who used them :-)

the danger of a single story
notes from an alien
what are words notes
why do people become writers
what is a genre
what makes a great story
jammers inaka
danger of a single story
reading helps writing
what happens when we read
kinds of writing
open source novel
common words used in writing
1200 most frequently used words
what sells books
how reading helps writing
what is a single story
free software for writers
freelance fiction writing
karla telega

BTW, jammers inaka and karla telega are people I’ve blogged about.

Any insights?

Can you divine a “profile” of the people who used those words?

What was going through their minds or hearts when they entered those words in the search bar?

Looking forward to your Comments :-)

Top 42 Posts & Pages on Reading, Writing, and Publishing

42?? Why not Top 10 or Top 50?

Well, this blog has been active since January 1st, 2011 (33,674 views) and I decided that posts which were, on average, viewed at least once a week were popular enough to include :-)

Plus, since there have been 466 Posts and I have 8 special Pages, the following 42 titles are my current cream-of-the-crop.

And, before you scan the list and start clicking on titles that interest you, I should account for the fact that the first most popular on the list has been viewed so many more times than the second most popular.

It’s one of the Truths of blogging that people who take the time to read a blog want to know who’s writing it; so, the “About” page is usually the most visited.

And, for the average of 56 people a day coming to this blog, about 3 of them are checking out who I am.

They’re probably also the folks who are reading a whole post :-)
